Happiness vs. Satisfaction
It is said that change is the only constant thing in this world. But, I think along with this cliché that says about constancy is the never ending search for happiness. Happiness is a never ending journey that man ventures on. I believe that no one becomes completely happy because of what he achieves at the moment. I think it is innate in us that we never become contented and in turn, we continuously search for something. This is very evident in the world we live on. The modernization we have is a just a fruit of man’s continuous search. Let’s take for example the Iphones present in the market. Those people who created and developed such phones are people who continuously search to improve and to make the lives of the people better in terms of communication, entertainment, etc. The mere “development” they do in such things prove that they never become contented in what they have previously created. That is why, the mere existence of the Iphone series is the result of man’s never ending search for happiness. Happiness that can be experienced by the sellers through the large profits they can have and by the buyers through the satisfaction they can get from the design, features, and usefulness of the product.
As for the movie, the relationship between satisfaction and happiness is very evident. On the latter part of the movie, Chris Gardner had struggled on selling the machines which is the source of his income. Gardner can satisfy the needs of his family but unfortunately, that does not bring happiness to his wife. That is why in the end, his wife left them because she no longer becomes happy with the situation they have. For this reason, we can say that in some instances money cannot make us always happy. People who can afford to meet their basic necessities are generally happier than those who cannot. But, there comes a time where wealth loses much of its power to create happiness. These rich people may claim that they are satisfied with the position they have in the society but we can never conclude that they are/will always be happy. Satisfaction is a just a key to happiness. In fact, even poor people can become happy despite the dissatisfaction and poverty they face. It is because happiness does not only depend on how much we have but on how much we enjoy them. Moreover, Gardner expressly said that the little part of his life he calls happiness is the moment he heard the good news about him getting the job he had worked hard for. He himself identified that it is just a little part of his life. I think what he meant is that it is just a part of his life he can be happy for. It is just one of the pursuits of happiness he has achieved in his life.
I think happiness is what all of us is searching for. But, I think without this kind of search we can really be happy just by having positive dispositions in life. If we see our failures as hindrances to achieve our dreams, then that does not make us happy rather it makes us see ourselves as weak and a failure itself. But, if we look at it in a different perspective, we can use it as a challenge to do better. This was also shown in the movie, wherein Gardner’s situation did not stop him from reaching his goal rather he makes it as an inspiration to work harder. That is why, more people who become successful and really happy comes from the bottom of the society; the rags-to-riches stories.
Artist Rob Gonsalves was born in Toronto, Canada in 1959. During his childhood, he developed an interest in drawing from imagination using various media. By age twelve, his awareness of architecture grew as he learned perspective techniques and began to do his first paintings and renderings of imagined buildings.
